THANE: The Thane station area and the nearby market plunged into darkness around 8.45 pm on Friday, creating a scare among shoppers and commuters.
MSEDCL officials said the unannounced power cut was due to the shutting down of a sub-station near Colour Chem company here. "There was heavy load on this sub-station for some time because of the shuffling of sub-station and feeders by our staff to distribute power equally. This particular sub-station had received maximum power load and had to be shut down for some time. Power will be restored to the station area from a different sub-station,'' a spokesperson of the Maharashtra State Energy Distribution Company Ltd told TOI.
The sudden blackout compelled shopkeepers to down shutters early, as inverters were not sufficiently charged due to power cuts in the day. All shops and houses from Thane market lane up to Jambhli naka were in darkness.
Meanwhile, fire brigade authorities said a tree had fallen in the premises of municipal commissioner R A Rajeev's official bungalow at Ghodbunder road here.
